If you’ve ever stood in front of the mirror and wondered why your skincare routine doesn’t seem to work as well as it once did, you’re certainly not alone.

As we move through our 50s and beyond, our skin naturally changes. It may become drier, lose some firmness, develop pigmentation or simply not have the same glow it once did. The good news is that you don’t need a bathroom full of expensive products to have healthy, radiant skin.

Welcome to Beautiful Things at 50.

I’m Julie, and skincare has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. I spent over 17 years working in the skincare industry, helping people find products that suited their skin and their lifestyle. Although I no longer work in skincare, my love of beauty has never left me—beauty shops are still one of my favourite places to browse, discover new launches and revisit trusted favourites.

Over the years, I’ve tried everything from luxury skincare to affordable high street finds, and I’ve learnt that great skin isn’t about owning the most expensive products or every new ingredient and trending product—it’s about understanding your skin and choosing products that genuinely work for you.

I’ve discovered where I believe it’s worth investing and where you can save your money without compromising results. My philosophy is simple: invest in hardworking active serums that deliver real results, then build the rest of your routine around effective cleansers, moisturisers and body care that you love to use.

Everything you’ll read in this article is based on products I’ve personally used, repurchased or would happily recommend to friends and family. As with all skincare, what works beautifully for one person may not work for another, but my aim is to help you make informed choices and build a routine that suits your skin, your lifestyle and your budget.

Turning 50 doesn’t mean giving up on healthy, radiant skin. With the right routine, consistency and a little patience, it’s absolutely possible to maintain skin that feels comfortable, looks healthy and gives you confidence every day.

My Skin at 50

Before I share my routine, I think it’s helpful to tell you a little about my skin, because what works for me may not be exactly right for everyone.

My skin is normal with occasional flushing and a few pesky little spider veins. Like many women in their 50s, I’ve noticed that it doesn’t bounce back quite as quickly as it used to, so my focus has shifted from trying every new product to choosing ingredients that genuinely support healthy skin.

My main skincare goals are maintaining firmness, softening the appearance of fine lines, improving mild pigmentation and, most importantly, keeping my skin looking healthy, radiant and glowing.

One thing I’ve learnt over the years is that consistency is key and skincare takes time to work for pigmentation, line smoothing and firming results before you overflow the bathroom cabinet with more. I’d much rather use a carefully chosen routine that I know works for my skin, add in additions depending on season, time and what my skin needs rather than constantly chase the latest trend.

I also believe you don’t have to spend a fortune on every product. I choose to invest in the active serums that make the biggest difference, while happily mixing them with affordable cleansers, moisturisers and body care that perform just as well.

Above all, I listen to my skin. If something doesn’t suit me, I don’t keep using it just because it’s popular. Finding the right routine is a personal journey, and that’s exactly what I hope this guide will help you do.

Why Skin Changes After 50

As we age, our skin naturally goes through many changes, particularly during and after the menopause. You may notice that products you’ve used for years no longer seem to give the same results, or that your skin suddenly feels drier, more sensitive or less radiant.

One of the biggest changes is the gradual decline in collagen production. Collagen is the protein that helps keep our skin firm and plump, so as levels decrease, it’s common to notice fine lines, a loss of firmness and changes in skin texture.

At the same time, our skin produces less natural oil, which can leave it feeling drier and make the skin barrier more vulnerable. This is why nourishing ingredients and barrier support become increasingly important as we get older.

Years of sun exposure can also start to show as pigmentation, uneven skin tone and a loss of brightness. While we can’t turn back the clock, we can help protect our skin and improve its overall appearance with the right ingredients and a consistent routine.

The good news is that healthy, glowing skin after 50 is absolutely achievable. It isn’t about chasing perfection or looking 30 again. For me, it’s about having skin that feels comfortable, looks healthy and gives me the confidence to go makeup-free whenever I choose.

I’ve found that a routine built around proven active ingredients and daily SPF delivers far better results than following every new trend.

The Ingredients I Look For After 50

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is one of my favourite morning skincare ingredients. It helps brighten the complexion, supports collagen production and can gradually improve the appearance of pigmentation caused by years of sun exposure.

My personal favourite is Medik8 C-Tetra Advanced which works beautifully for my skin.

Peptides

If I had to choose one ingredient that has become a permanent part of my routine, it would be peptides.

Peptides help support collagen, improve firmness and keep skin looking healthy and resilient. They’re one of the reasons I enjoy using Medik8 Liquid Peptides Advanced MP.Another great peptide formula is from Naturium Muliti Peptide Advanced serum.

Retinal

Retinal is one of the most effective ingredients for improving fine lines, uneven texture and overall skin quality.

Introduced gradually and used consistently, it can make a remarkable difference to mature skin. My favourite is Medik8 Crystal Retinal, which has become an essential part of my evening routine.

Ceramides

Ceramides are essential for maintaining a healthy skin barrier.

As our skin naturally becomes drier with age, I actively look for products containing ceramides to help lock in moisture and keep my skin feeling comfortable and hydrated. A great option is Dr Jart+ Ceramidin cream and one I cant wait to try Prequel AM/PMModern moisturiser.

Squalane

Squalane is a wonderful ingredient for mature skin because it provides lightweight hydration without feeling heavy or greasy.

It helps support the skin barrier, reduces moisture loss and leaves my skin feeling soft, comfortable and nourished. An excellent moisturiser I’ve just finished featuring squalane is the S.Nature Aqua Squalane moisturising cream. Always on rotation is the Naturium Barrier Bounce

Azelaic Acid

Azelaic Acid is one of skincare’s quiet achievers.

It’s brilliant for improving uneven skin tone, reducing redness and helping with the occasional breakout. Its a difficult ingredient to make cosmetically elegant though so trial and error on finding one in a formula you enjoy using that is effective. I like the Naturium Azelaic acid and The Inkey list super solutions.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide is often recommended to, reduce pigmentation, reduce pores, target dullness and improve overall skin tone. I find its many products nowadays anyway rather than a seperate product you need to add into your routine.

However, skincare is never one-size-fits-all. While many people love niacinamide, some women—particularly those with rosacea—find it can cause flushing or irritation. The same applies to Vitamin C. Listen to your skin rather than following trends, and don’t be afraid to choose products that suit you rather than what’s currently popular.

Ingredients I Prefer to Avoid

Over the years, I’ve learnt that choosing the right ingredients is only half the story. Knowing what doesn’t suit your skin can be just as important.

As our skin matures, it’s often more delicate and the skin barrier can become easier to disrupt. That’s why I’m careful about introducing new products and always pay attention to how my skin responds.

Personally, I try to avoid:

  • Highly fragranced skincare that can sometimes cause unnecessary irritation or sensitivity.
  • Harsh physical scrubs, which can damage the skin barrier and create tiny micro-tears in the skin.
  • Over-exfoliating. It can be tempting to think more exfoliation will give brighter skin, but I’ve found the opposite is often true. Too much exfoliation can leave skin feeling tight, dry and reactive.

I’ve also learnt that ingredients don’t behave the same way for everyone.

For example, I personally found it took several attempts to find a Vitamin C serum that my skin loved. If one Vitamin C serum doesn’t suit you, don’t give up—different formulations can perform very differently so don’t be discouraged if the first one you try isn’t right for you.

Similarly, while Niacinamide is an excellent ingredient for many people, some women—particularly those with rosacea—find it can trigger flushing or irritation.

One of the best pieces of skincare advice I can give is to listen to your own skin. Trends come and go, but your skin will always tell you what it likes and what it doesn’t.

My Morning Skincare Routine

I’ve found that a consistent morning routine doesn’t have to be complicated. For me, it’s about protecting my skin, supporting collagen production and keeping my skin hydrated and glowing throughout the day.

Step 1 – Gentle Cleanse

I always start with a gentle cleanser to remove any overnight skincare, oil and impurities without stripping my skin.

Some of my favourites are:

  • Byoma Milky Moisture Cleanser – hydrating, refreshing and perfect for everyday use.
  • Kate Somerville Goat Milk Moisturising Cleanser – beautifully gentle with a subtle almond aroma that makes cleansing feel like a little luxury.
  • Dr Sam’s Flawless Cleanser – simple, effective and kind to the skin barrier.
  • Dr. Althea Gentle Bubble Cleanser – a lovely creamy cleanser that leaves my skin feeling soft and comfortable.

Step 2 – Barrier Support

After cleansing, I like to give my skin an extra layer of hydration with a barrier-supporting mist.

At the moment, I enjoy:

  • Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Barrier NAD Mist
  • Aestura Atobarrier Mist
  • Dr. Althea 345 Relief Cream Mist, which is wonderfully soothing and ideal when my skin is feeling a little dry or in need of extra comfort.

These help leave my skin feeling calm, hydrated and ready for the rest of my routine.

Step 3 – Vitamin C Serum

The one my morning skin loves is Medik8 C-Tetra Advanced. It gives my skin a beautiful glow, feels wonderfully nourishing and has become a staple in my morning routine.

Step 4 – Moisturiser

A good moisturiser doesn’t have to be the most expensive product in your routine. I prefer to invest in high-performing serums where the active ingredients do the hard work, then choose a moisturiser that keeps my skin comfortable, nourished and well hydrated.

This is the step that changes the most for me depending on the season, how my skin is feeling and even what I have planned for the day. Some mornings I like to keep things simple and use Medik8 Advanced Day Ultimate Protect SPF 50+, which combines both moisturiser and SPF in one beautifully hydrating product.

If I’m using a separate moisturiser and SPF, my current favourites are:

  • Erborian Centella Crème – wonderfully soothing and ideal when my skin needs a little extra comfort.
  • S.Nature Aqua Squalane Moisturising Cream – lightweight, deeply hydrating and one I reach for again and again.

Both leave my skin feeling soft, comfortable and well hydrated without feeling heavy, making them perfect under makeup.

Step 5– Eye Care

I like to choose my eye products according to the results I want to achieve.

My main focus is maintaining firmness while keeping the eye area hydrated and refreshed.

Morning favourites:

  • The INKEY List Caffeine Eye Cream for helping to reduce the appearance of puffiness.
  • Paula’s Choice Pro-Collagen Peptide Plumping Eye Cream for hydration and smoothing.

Step 6– SPF (The Most Important Step)

The final step in my morning routine is one I never skip—sun protection.

Daily SPF is one of the best anti-ageing products you can use. It helps protect collagen, reduce further pigmentation and defend the skin against the damage caused by UV exposure.

My current favourite mineral sunscreens are:

  • Kosas DreamBeam SPF 30 (beautiful for adding a healthy, radiant glow)
  • Kate Somerville IllumiKate™ SPF 50+ Illuminating Drops (perfect for those days when my skin needs a little extra luminosity)
  • Heliocare 360 Mineral Tolerance Fluid SPF 50+

My current chemical favourites:

  • Byoma SPF 50
  • Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Moisture Airyfit Daily Sunscreen SPF 50+
  • SKIN1004 Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum SPF 50+
  • Korres Sheer Glow Daily Sunscreen SPF 50, which gives a beautiful radiant finish and sits beautifully under makeup without feeling heavy or greasy.

My Evening Skincare Routine

Evening is when I like to focus on repair and nourishment. This is the time to remove the day, support my skin barrier and use the active ingredients that help maintain healthy, radiant skin.

This is also when retinal really works its magic. While you sleep, your skin naturally goes into repair mode, making the evening the perfect time to use ingredients that help improve firmness, smooth fine lines and maintain a healthy glow.

Step 1 – Double Cleanse

If I’ve been wearing makeup or SPF (which is every day!), I always start with a double cleanse.

The first cleanse removes sunscreen, makeup and the day’s impurities, while the second cleanse ensures my skin is thoroughly clean and ready for the rest of my routine.

Some first cleanse favourites include:

  • Then I Met You Living Cleansing Balm
  • Emma Hardie Moringa Cleansing Gel
  • Iconic London underglow matcha elting cleansing balm

I then follow with one of my favourite gentle cleansers from my morning routine. Its worth noting if you have dry sensitive skin you may find a single cleanse works best for you.

Personally my skin always feels much fresher after taking this extra step, and I find my serums absorb much better.

Step 2 – Peptides

After cleansing, I apply Medik8 Liquid Peptides Advanced MP.

For me, this is one of those products that’s worth investing in because peptides are fantastic for supporting firmness and healthy-looking skin.

Step 3 – Retinal

Next comes Medik8 Crystal Retinal.

People often ask what the difference is between retinol and retinal. Both are forms of Vitamin A, but retinal is one step closer to the active form that your skin can use. That means it generally works more efficiently while still being well tolerated when introduced gradually.

I started with Medik8 Crystal Retinal Strength 3 and slowly worked my way up over time, using the sandwich method while my skin adjusted. I’m now using Medik8 Crystal Retinal Strength 20, and it’s become one of the products I feel has made the biggest difference to my skin. It helps improve the appearance of fine lines, supports smoother skin texture and keeps my complexion looking healthy and radiant.

If you’re new to retinal, always start with a lower strength and build up gradually. Start using it twice a week slowly increasing your usage to give the skin time to acclimatise.

Step 4 – Moisturising Night Cream

I finish with a nourishing moisturiser to help seal everything in overnight.

Three of my favourites are:

A good moisturiser doesn’t have to be the most expensive product in your routine. I prefer to invest in high-performing serums, where the active ingredients do the hard work, and choose a moisturiser that keeps my skin comfortable, nourished and well hydrated.

Step 5 – Eye Care & Lips

My final skincare step is my eye product.

I use Medik8 Crystal Retinal Ceramide Eye, choosing the strength that’s right for my skin. It’s an excellent overnight treatment for targeting fine lines while remaining gentle enough to build up over time.

To finish, I always apply a nourishing lip treatment before bed.

Some favourites include:

  • Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask
  • CeraVe Advanced Repair Ointment
  • Ole Henriksen Pout Preserve Peptide Lip Treatment

Weekly Skincare Additions

I don’t believe you need an endless collection of products to have great skin. Most of the improvements come from being consistent with your daily routine, but there are a few treatments I like to include once or twice a week.

Gentle Exfoliation

As we get older, our skin doesn’t renew itself quite as quickly, so gentle exfoliation can help brighten the complexion and improve skin texture.

I prefer gentle AHA exfoliants rather than harsh scrubs. At the moment I’m really enjoying the Anua Heartleaf 77 Clear Pad. It’s effective without being harsh, and I use it once a week to lift away dull skin cells, leaving my complexion looking fresher and helping the rest of my skincare absorb more effectively.

The key is not to overdo it. Once a week is plenty for my skin, and I’d always rather be consistent than over-exfoliate.

Face Masks

A treatment mask can give your skin an extra boost of hydration and comfort when it needs it.

One I’ve really been enjoying recently is Dr.Jart+ Cicapair Sleepair Intensive Soothing Repair Mask, especially if my skin is feeling a little vulnerable or needs some extra TLC overnight.

I also enjoy using a sheet mask particularly when I’m on holiday or my skin needs a little extra hydration.

One I really like is the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Watergel Sheet Ampoule Mask, especially after a day in the sun when my skin is craving moisture and a little TLC.

At home, I also enjoy the Dr. Jart+ Cryo Rubber Firming Mask. For me, it’s just as much about taking twenty minutes for myself as it is about the skincare. It’s a lovely little act of self-care that encourages me to slow down, relax and unwind at the end of a busy day.

While face masks can give your skin a wonderful boost of hydration and leave it looking refreshed, I don’t see them as a replacement for a good daily skincare routine. The real hard work still comes from using your cleanser, serums, retinal and SPF consistently. Masks are simply the icing on the cake

Listen to Your Skin

One thing I’ve learnt over the years is that your skin’s needs change.

Some weeks my skin is perfectly happy with my usual routine. Other times particularly during seasonal changes, after travelling or when I’m feeling stressed it needs a little more hydration and barrier support.

Rather than following strict routines I try to listen to what my skin is telling me and adjust my routine accordingly.

Don’t Forget the Body

When we think about skincare, it’s easy to focus all our attention on our face. But our neck, chest, hands and body deserve just as much care, especially as we get older.

Just like the skin on our face, the skin on our body naturally becomes drier over time, so keeping it hydrated and well nourished can make a noticeable difference to how it looks and feels.

One range I’ve been particularly impressed with is the Naturium Glow Getter Body Range. It leaves my skin feeling soft, comfortable and beautifully hydrated without feeling heavy, making it a real pleasure to use.

I also enjoy using body oils, particularly after showering when my skin is still slightly damp. They help lock in moisture, add a healthy-looking radiance and leave my skin feeling silky smooth. As well as Naturuim This Work Skin Deep Dry Leg Oil and Aveeno Skin Relief Body Oil Spray are excellent and also come in a travel size so no excuses.

One area that’s often overlooked is our underarms. Thankfully, deodorants have come a long way, and many now contain skincare ingredients that help care for the skin while keeping you feeling fresh. Not all deodorants are created equal, so I like to look for formulas with skin-loving ingredients that help keep this delicate area comfortable and healthy. Im loving Saltair serum deodorant and Phlur vanilla skin deodorant.

I also try to remember that body care isn’t just about moisturising. Looking after your hands, neck and decollete with the same care you give your face can help maintain healthy-looking skin from head to toe. My hand cream favourite is currently L ‘Occitane Amande Delicious Hand Cream if a product bring enjoyment you will use it

For me, body care isn’t an afterthought—it’s simply an extension of my skincare routine.

What I’ve Learned About Skincare at 50

One thing I’ve learnt over the years is that consistency is key. Skincare takes time to improve pigmentation, soften the appearance of fine lines and support firmness. I’d much rather use a carefully chosen routine that I know works for my skin, adapting it with seasonal additions when needed rather than constantly chasing the latest trend.

Finding the right routine is personal, and that’s exactly what I hope this article helps you do.

looking after my skin has become about much more than trying to look younger. It’s a few quiet minutes each morning and evening that help me slow down, take care of myself and feel my best.

Most importantly, I’ve stopped chasing perfection.

Real skin has texture. It changes with the seasons, hormones, stress and life itself. That’s completely normal.

Today, my goal isn’t flawless skin—it’s healthy, comfortable, glowing skin that gives me confidence.

And honestly, that’s a much nicer place to be.

Final Thought

I’ve realised skincare isn’t about trying to look twenty-five forever.

It’s about looking after the skin I’m in today—and helping it be as healthy and comfortable as it can be.

Healthy, comfortable, glowing skin at 50 looks very different from healthy skin at 25 and that’s perfectly okay.
