The Best Face SPF for Women Over 50: How to Choose the Right One for You

There are so many facial sunscreens to choose from these days that it can be difficult to know where to start.

One of the biggest things I’ve learnt over the years is that there isn’t one perfect SPF for everyone. In fact, I don’t think there’s even one perfect SPF for me.

Different days call for different products.

If I’m spending the day outdoors or on holiday, I’ll choose something different to what I’d wear for a quick trip into town or a day at work. Some days I want something lightweight under makeup, while on others I might prefer a little extra glow or a tinted SPF instead of foundation.

The good news is there’s now an SPF to suit almost every skin type, routine and lifestyle.

For me, sunscreen isn’t just about preventing sunburn. It’s one of the most important steps in looking after my skin, helping to protect against premature ageing, pigmentation and maintaining healthy skin for years to come.

There Isn’t Just One Type of SPF

One of the biggest misconceptions about sunscreen is that you have to find one product and use it for everything.

I don’t think that’s true.

You can choose what suits your skin, your routine and how you like to wear makeup.

You might have:

  • a classic sunscreen for holidays and long days outdoors
  • a lightweight SPF for everyday wear
  • a glowing SPF when your skin needs a little radiance
  • a primer with SPF under makeup
  • a tinted SPF for lighter makeup days
  • a sunscreen mist or stick for easy top-ups while you’re out.

Having different options doesn’t complicate your routine—it makes it easier to wear sunscreen every day.

Understanding the Different Types of SPF

Tinted SPF

Tinted sunscreens are brilliant if you like a natural makeup look.

They can:

  • softly even out the complexion
  • reduce the appearance of redness
  • replace a light base on no-makeup days
  • help some mineral formulas look more flattering rather than leaving a white cast.

Radiance or Glow SPFs

These leave the skin looking healthy and luminous rather than flat or matte.

As I’ve got older I’ve definitely found myself preferring a healthy glow over heavy coverage.

Fragrance-Free Formulas

If your skin is sensitive, fragrance-free formulas can often feel more comfortable while still giving excellent protection.

Comfortable Moisturising SPFs

Some sunscreens feel more like your daily moisturiser, making them ideal if you don’t enjoy layering lots of products.

SPF Sprays and Sun Sticks

These have become staples for me.

They’re incredibly useful for topping up throughout the day, particularly if you’re already wearing makeup.

My Favourite Face SPFs

Mineral Sunscreens

If you have sensitive skin or rosacea, mineral sunscreens are often worth considering because they’re generally less likely to sting or cause irritation than some chemical formulas. Of course, everyone’s skin is different, so it’s still worth finding the formula that works best for you.

If I want a mineral sunscreen, these are the ones I reach for most often.

Emma Lewisham Sunceutical SPF 50 has become one of my favourites. I love the innovative hygienic pump hidden inside what looks like a traditional cream jar. It feels luxurious and the formula sits beautifully on my skin. The only downside is that it’s quite bulky, so I tend to leave it at home rather than travel with it.

For travelling, Heliocare 360 Mineral Tolerance Fluid SPF 50 is excellent. It’s compact, lightweight and much more budget-friendly.

I’ve also really enjoyed using Summer Fridays ShadeDrops, another lovely mineral option.

Lightweight Everyday SPFs

If I’m wearing makeup, I nearly always reach for lighter textures.

Skin1004 Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum SPF 50 is one of the lightest formulas I’ve tried. It disappears into the skin and layers beautifully under makeup.

I also really enjoy Byoma SPF 50, another lightweight sunscreen that feels comfortable throughout the day.

For a Healthy Glow

Sometimes I don’t want full makeup—I just want my skin to look fresher.

The Korres Red Grape Sheer Glow Daily Sunscreen SPF 50 gives a lovely healthy radiance without feeling heavy. I actually discovered it in a holiday pharmacy—one of my favourite places to browse—and was delighted to find it’s available in the UK too.

If I want even more glow, I like Supergoop Glowscreen, although I use it sparingly because it’s definitely on the glowier side.

Primers with SPF

If you’re someone who wears makeup most days, primers with SPF can work really well underneath foundation.

Two that I’ve enjoyed are:

  • Supergoop
  • Kosas DreamBeam

Tinted Options

For lighter makeup days I also enjoy:

  • Kay Beauty Hydro Glow Tinted Sunscreen SPF 40
  • Kosas DreamBeam Sunlit SPF 30 when I’ve got a little colour
  • Erborian CC Red Correct SPF 30 when my skin feels slightly flushed.

The important thing to remember is that SPF in makeup is a bonus—not your main protection.

Protecting More Than Your Face

When we think about sunscreen, we usually think about our face.

But there are plenty of areas that are easy to forget.

For me these include:

  • lips
  • ears
  • hair parting
  • scalp
  • neck

One lesson I learnt the hard way was my scalp.

After catching the sun on my parting once, I realised I’d been so focused on protecting my face that I’d completely forgotten my hairline.

During the summer, or if I know I’m going to be spending a long time outdoors, I’ll use Malibu Scalp Protector SPF 50. I found it surprisingly difficult to find a scalp sunscreen that didn’t leave my hair feeling greasy, but this one has worked really well for me.

If I’m spending the day outside or on holiday, I’d also recommend using a lip SPF. Hello Sunday SPF 50 Tinted Lip Balm is one I’ve enjoyed using, and it’s an easy step that’s often overlooked.

For topping up throughout the day, I also like keeping an SPF mist and a sun stick in my bag. They make reapplying much easier, especially if I’m already wearing makeup.

What’s in My Summer Bag

Once I’ve applied my sunscreen in the morning, I don’t just forget about it.

If I’m out for the day I like having a few essentials with me.

Alongside my SPF, you’ll often find:

  • an SPF mist for easy reapplication throughout the day
  • a sun stick for quick touch-ups
  • a lip SPF
  • a pair of sunglasses
  • hydration sachets
  • a travel-size fragrance
  • a handheld fan

Final Thoughts

For me, sunscreen is probably the closest thing skincare has to a long-term investment.

It’s not about chasing perfect skin.

It’s about protecting the skin I have today.

One of the biggest mistakes I think many of us make is simply not applying enough sunscreen in the first place—and then forgetting to reapply it if we’re spending time outdoors.

I also try to check expiry dates regularly because sunscreen becomes less effective over time.

Most importantly, don’t feel you need to find one “perfect” SPF.

Choose products that suit your skin, your lifestyle and the way you enjoy wearing makeup.

Because the best sunscreen isn’t necessarily the most expensive one.

It’s the one you’ll happily wear every single morning.
