Why I Replaced My Rituals Perfume Genie (And Why I’d Buy It Again)

We all have those little things around the house that make everyday life feel that bit more special. For me, it’s the Rituals Perfume Genie.

When my original Genie finally broke, well after its warranty had expired, I didn’t think twice about replacing it. That’s probably the biggest recommendation I can give.

I’ve never been a fan of traditional water diffusers. I don’t like constantly refilling them, and I really don’t like the damp residue they can leave behind. I’ve never had much success with reed diffusers either because after a while I struggle to notice the fragrance.

The Rituals Perfume Genie is completely different. It uses dry fragrance technology, so there’s no water, no steam and no mess—just beautifully scented rooms at the touch of a button.

A Design That Looks Beautiful in Your Home

One of the first things I noticed about the Perfume Genie is that it doesn’t actually look like a diffuser.

Rather than the usual cylindrical design, it has an elegant teardrop shape that looks more like a decorative accessory than an appliance. Mine is the gold version, although it’s also available in black if you prefer a more contemporary look.

It sits happily on a shelf or side table without drawing attention to itself, which is exactly what I wanted.

The Smart App That Makes It So Easy to Use

Everything is controlled through the Rituals smartphone app, and it’s genuinely one of my favourite features.

I can simply open the app, switch the Genie on, adjust the fragrance strength and let it switch itself off automatically.

The app also allows you to:

• schedule exactly when the fragrance is released
• adjust the intensity depending on the room
• receive a notification when the fragrance cartridge is running low.

I usually switch mine on for an hour or so in the evening, or during the day if I’m out, so the room smells lovely when I come home. At weekends I’ll often put it on while I’m cleaning the house because it’s such a nice feeling walking back into a beautifully scented room afterwards.

Because I have a dog, I personally prefer using it this way rather than leaving it running for long periods, although the automatic shut-off makes it incredibly convenient.

Changing the Mood of Your Home

One of the nicest things about the Perfume Genie is how easy it is to change the atmosphere in your home simply by swapping the fragrance cartridge.

My absolute favourite is Precious Amber. I also have the matching candle and room spray, although I tend to save this fragrance for the cooler months because it has a rich, powdery amber scent with delicate floral notes that feels wonderfully cosy.

For spring and summer I enjoy lighter fragrances such as:

• The Ritual of Sakura – cherry blossom and rice milk for a fresh, uplifting feel.
• The Ritual of Ayurveda – Indian rose and sweet almond oil for a comforting, relaxing fragrance.
• The Ritual of Jing – sacred lotus and jujube, perfect for winding down in the evening.

Changing the cartridge almost feels like changing the season in your home.

No Water, No Mess

Using the Perfume Genie couldn’t be simpler.

You simply insert the fragrance cartridge into the compartment and it’s ready to use. There’s no pouring oils, no water to refill and nothing to clean afterwards.

Each cartridge lasts for around 270 hours, so although replacement cartridges are an ongoing cost, I don’t feel like I’m constantly buying new ones.

My Tip

Before throwing an empty cartridge away, I usually leave it on a shelf or inside a cupboard for a little while longer because it continues to release a lovely fragrance. I just avoid placing it directly against clothing or delicate fabrics, just in case.

Things Worth Knowing Before You Buy

here are only two things I’d consider before buying the Perfume Genie.

Firstly, everything is controlled through the app. Personally I love this because it gives me much more control, but if you prefer physical buttons you may find it a little restrictive.

Secondly, the initial cost of the device and the replacement cartridges isn’t inexpensive. However, because each cartridge lasts such a long time, I feel they’re good value for how often I use mine.

Final Thoughts

The Rituals Perfume Genie has become one of those everyday luxuries that I genuinely miss when it’s not there.

It creates a beautifully scented home without the mess of traditional water diffusers, it looks elegant enough to leave on display and the app makes it incredibly simple to use.

Most importantly, when mine finally broke after years of use, I didn’t hesitate to buy another one.
