Introduction

I’ve always loved makeup, and although my skin has changed over the years, I still enjoy discovering new products and techniques.

One of the biggest changes I’ve made is adapting how I wear my makeup. I no longer draw the bold black winged eyeliner I loved years ago. As my eyelids have become more hooded, I’ve switched to creating a softer wing with a creamy pencil—and I actually prefer it.

Today there are more makeup brands and innovations than ever before. While all that choice can feel overwhelming, it’s also exciting. There are products designed to work beautifully on mature skin, from skin tints and cream blushes to tubing mascaras and skincare-infused foundations.

This guide isn’t about telling you what you should or shouldn’t wear. It’s simply a collection of the products, tips and techniques I’ve found work for me. I hope it encourages you to try something new, because makeup should still be enjoyable at 50 and beyond.

Prime

Beautiful makeup starts with healthy skin. In my experience, even the best makeup looks better when your skin is healthy, hydrated and comfortable. Looking after your skin first means your makeup will apply more smoothly, sit better throughout the day and look more natural.

Once my skincare is done, I like to use a primer to create the perfect base. As my skin has changed, I’ve found that primers help smooth the skin, add hydration and give my makeup something to hold on to, helping it stay looking fresher for longer.

There are so many primers available now that it can feel confusing, but you don’t need lots of different products. I tend to choose one depending on how I want my skin to look that day. Sometimes I want a fresh, natural glow, while other days I want my makeup to last from morning until evening.

The Vieve Skin Nova is one I reach for regularly. It gives my skin a healthy glow without looking glittery and works beautifully under foundation or on its own when I want a lighter makeup day.

When I know I’m going to be wearing makeup for longer, I like Vieve Super Skin Nova. It helps my makeup stay looking fresh while still keeping that natural, skin-like finish that I prefer.

I’ve also been impressed with Sculpted by Aimee Beauty Base Protect SPF 50. It combines primer and sun protection in one product, making it a great option for everyday wear when I’m trying to simplify my morning routine.

For days when I want an extra boost of radiance, ICONIC London Underglow Blurring Primer gives a lovely soft-focus finish that helps my skin look brighter without feeling heavy.

If you enjoy wearing eyeshadow, I’d also recommend using an eyeshadow primer. It helps prevent creasing and keeps eyeshadow looking fresher for longer.

You certainly don’t need every primer on the market, but finding one that suits your skin can make the rest of your makeup apply more beautifully.

Texture Makes All the Difference

As my skin has changed, I’ve found that lighter, more hydrating formulas simply look better. They blend more naturally into the skin rather than sitting on top of it. and give a fresher, more natural finish.

That doesn’t mean you have to give up foundation. It’s simply about finding formulas that work with your skin today. There are so many beautiful options now, from skin tints and complexion balms to lightweight foundations and BB or CC creams. They even out the skin tone while still allowing your natural skin to show through.

On days when I want more coverage, I build it gradually rather than applying a heavy layer all at once. I’ve found this gives a much more flattering finish and avoids makeup settling into fine lines.

Some of the complexion products I reach for most often are Armani Luminous Silk, Vieve Skin Nova Complexion Balm, Lisa Eldridge Seamless Skin Tint and Erborian CC Creams. Each gives a slightly different finish, so I choose depending on how my skin looks and what I’m doing that day.

Don’t stay loyal to a foundation just because you’ve worn it for years. Our skin changes, and our makeup can change with it. Trying newer formulas has been one of the best discoveries I’ve made, and there really has never been a better choice of products for mature skin.

Concealer

Concealer is another product I’ve changed the way I use over the years.

Rather than applying lots of product, I use a small amount exactly where it’s needed. I usually apply it to the back of my hand first before picking it up with a brush. This gives me much more control and creates a softer, more natural finish.

I also tend to use different concealers for different jobs. A lightweight concealer works well under the eyes, while a more precise formula is perfect for covering pigmentation or the occasional blemish without needing extra foundation.

Some of my favourites include Erborian CC Eye, ILIA Skin Rewind Concealer, Lisa Eldridge Pinpoint Concealer, Maybelline mMcroscopic pencil concealer, and the Kissio Close Up Shot Concealer Pencil, which is brilliant for targeted application.

Cream Blusher: The Product I’d Recommend Most

If there was one makeup product I’d encourage every woman over 50 to try, it would be a cream blusher

I’ve found that adding a cream or liquid blush instantly brings my complexion back to life and helps me look healthier and more awake.

If, like me, you’ve decided to embrace the grey, blusher becomes even more important. It adds warmth and freshness to the face and helps create a beautifully balanced look.

Cream formulas are my personal favourite because they blend effortlessly into the skin and give a soft, natural-looking finish. They never look obvious and are easy to build if you prefer a little more colour.

My favourites are the Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks Blush Sticks, which I’ve already reviewed on the blog, along with Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush and NARS The Multiple. They all give a fresh, healthy flush that lasts well throughout the day.

I feel exactly the same about bronzer. I tend to reach for cream formulas and bronzers without shimmer, as they blend more naturally into the skin and add warmth without drawing attention to texture. A little swept around the forehead, temples and cheeks can make a real difference without looking overdone.

Highlighter is a product I use every single day because it makes such a difference to how fresh and radiant my skin looks. Rather than a glittery finish, I look for products that give the skin a soft, natural glow. I usually apply it with a brush for a more diffused finish, but highlighter sticks are brilliant when I’m out and about as they’re so easy to blend with your fingertips.

Some of my favourites include Westman Atelier Lit Up Highlight Stick and Merit Day Glow Highlighting Balm. Both give that healthy, luminous finish that makes skin look fresh rather than sparkly.

The lovely thing about cream products is that they’re very forgiving. You don’t have to get them perfect, and they blend beautifully with your fingertips, a brush or a sponge. Sometimes the smallest touch of colour is all it takes to make your whole complexion look brighter.

Define Your Features

One of the biggest changes I’ve made over the years is how I define my eyes and brows. I haven’t stopped wearing eyeliner or mascara—I’ve simply adapted the way I use them.

Brows

Like many women, I embraced the thin eyebrow trend of the 90s, and unfortunately mine never completely grew back. As we’ve got older, our brows can naturally become a little sparser too, so I now like to gently fill in any gaps while still keeping them looking soft and natural.

A fine brow pencil lets me fill in any sparse areas with light, hair-like strokes, before finishing with a brow gel to keep everything in place. It’s amazing how much difference well-groomed brows can make to framing the face.

Eyeliner

I used to love a bold black winged eyeliner, but as my eyelids have become more hooded, I’ve adapted the way I create it.

Instead of using a liquid liner, I now prefer a creamy pencil in a softer shade such as brown or charcoal. I still create a wing, but it’s shorter, softer and much more flattering on my eye shape. I gently blend the pencil before it sets, which gives definition without looking harsh.

It’s a great reminder that changing your technique doesn’t mean giving up the looks you love—it simply means finding a version that works for you now.

Mascara

Mascara is the finishing touch that brings everything together.

I look for formulas that separate and define my lashes without clumping, and I often prefer slimmer brushes because they make it easier to reach every lash.

Using an eyelash curler before mascara also makes a noticeable difference. It opens up the eyes and gives the lashes a gentle lift without needing lots of product.

Some of my favourites include Urban Decay Tube Job Tubing Mascara, Tarte Tartelette Tubing Mascara and Hourglass Unlocked Instant Extensions Mascara. They all give lovely definition while still looking natural.

My Everyday Eye Essentials

Alongside mascara and eyeliner, there are a few tools I wouldn’t be without. A good pair of tweezers, an eyelash curler and an illuminated magnifying mirror all make applying makeup much easier, especially as our eyesight changes.

The right tools don’t just make makeup easier to apply—they help achieve a more polished finish too.

Lips

One thing I’ve never stopped enjoying is lipstick.

There’s sometimes an idea that we should avoid a bold lip as we get older, but I don’t believe that’s true at all. A lipstick can instantly brighten your complexion and become the finishing touch that brings your whole makeup look together.

As our lips naturally become a little drier over time, I find preparation makes all the difference. Keeping lips hydrated helps lipstick apply more smoothly and gives a much better finish.

I also like to use a lip liner, especially with stronger shades. Rather than lining right into the corners of my mouth, I find it much more flattering to focus on the middle of the lips and work outwards, leaving the very corners softer. It creates a more natural shape and avoids drawing attention to an area that can change as we get older.

If you haven’t tried them already, I’d also recommend looking at some of the newer blurred lip products. They have a lightweight, creamy texture and create a beautifully soft, diffused finish that’s incredibly flattering and comfortable to wear.

Some of my favourites include Lisa Eldridge True Velvet Lipsticks, Merit Signature Lip, REFY Lip Blur and Westman Atelier Lip Suede. They all give a different level of intensity. The Lisa Eldridge lipsticks create a more polished, classic lipstick look, while the others can be worn as a subtle wash of colour or built up for more impact, especially when paired with a lip liner.

Whether I’m wearing a soft everyday shade or a bold red, lipstick is often the last thing I apply before leaving the house. It’s the finishing touch that makes me feel put together.

The Little Things That Make a Big Difference

One product I’ve added to my routine over the last few years is a setting spray, and it’s made a noticeable difference to how long my makeup lasts.

The Laura Mercier Translucent Pure Setting Spray and Morphe Continuous Setting Mist are the two I reach for most often. They help keep my makeup looking fresh throughout the day and are a great finishing step once I’ve completed my makeup.

I also always keep a facial mist close by. The Caudalie Grape Water, Hydrating Antioxidant Mist and Avène Thermal Spring Water are lovely for refreshing and hydrating the skin throughout the day, especially during warmer weather or if you’ve been sitting in an air-conditioned office or travelling.

You’ll also spot a little handheld fan in the photo. It might seem like an unusual beauty essential, but I honestly wouldn’t be without it. If, like me, you experience the occasional menopause hot flush, a cooling facial mist followed by the handheld fan instantly helps cool and refresh my skin without disturbing my makeup. It’s one of those little purchases that makes a much bigger difference than you might expect.
