Medik8 Crystal Retinal Review: My Experience Using It Over 50
Retinal has become one of the most important ingredients in my evening skincare routine, but it’s also something I’ve approached gradually.
I’ve worked my way through the Medik8 Crystal Retinal strengths rather than rushing to the strongest formula. I started with Crystal Retinal 3, gradually moved up through the range and I’m now using Crystal Retinal 20.
I still alternate between strengths 10 and 20 while my skin adjusts fully, but I’ve experienced no irritation using it this way. My plan is eventually to stay with strength 20.
What I particularly like about Crystal Retinal is that it feels like a serious active skincare product without making my evening routine complicated.
Retinal vs Retinol – What’s the Difference?
Retinol and retinal are both forms of vitamin A, but there is an important difference between them.
Retinol needs to convert into retinal before it can then convert into retinoic acid, the form the skin can use. Retinal is already one step further along this conversion process.
This is one of the reasons retinal has become such an interesting ingredient in skincare. It can offer the benefits we associate with vitamin A while fitting easily into an evening skincare routine.
For skin as we age, those benefits can include supporting smoother-looking skin, improving the appearance of fine lines and uneven texture, and helping skin look firmer and more radiant.
For me, the key has been introducing it gradually rather than assuming that stronger automatically means better.
How I Worked Up to Crystal Retinal 20
I started with Medik8 Crystal Retinal 3 and allowed my skin plenty of time to become accustomed to retinal before increasing the strength.
I’ve gradually progressed through the range and I’m now at Crystal Retinal 20. At the moment, I still alternate between 10 and 20 rather than using 20 every time.
This approach has worked extremely well for me. I haven’t experienced irritation and, once I feel completely comfortable with 20, that is the strength I intend to stay with.
I think this gradual approach is particularly important with active skincare. I would much rather use something consistently and comfortably than move too quickly and end up having to stop using it altogether.

What Is Medik8 Crystal Retinal Like to Use?
One thing you notice immediately is the colour. Crystal Retinal is a bright yellow cream, with my strength 20 appearing noticeably brighter than my strength 10.
You really don’t need a lot of product. I apply a small amount in the evening and give it a few seconds to absorb before moving on to the next step in my routine.
It doesn’t disappear instantly into my skin, but I actually like taking those few seconds before applying anything over it.
I follow it with a nourishing night product, but I find I don’t need to layer lots of heavy skincare on top. For me, keeping the routine relatively simple works best.

Why I Have One Retinal-Free Night Each Week
Although retinal is a regular part of my routine, I deliberately have one evening each week when I don’t use it.
That evening is purely about hydration, repair and supporting my skin barrier.
I look for ingredients such as squalane, ceramides and hyaluronic acid and keep everything gentle and comforting. I like giving my skin an evening where I’m not asking it to do anything other than feel hydrated and well looked after.
For me, this balance between active skincare and barrier support has become increasingly important.
Crystal Retinal and Travel
Another small thing I really like about Crystal Retinal is the packaging. The tube is light, compact and very easy to travel with, particularly for trips within the UK.
When I’m travelling abroad, however, I tend to change my skincare routine.
Rather than taking my usual anti-ageing actives with me, I simplify everything and concentrate on hydration and supporting my skin barrier. Changes in climate, flights, air conditioning and being out of my normal routine are enough for my skin to deal with.
I’d rather return to my active skincare when I’m home.
Is Medik8 Crystal Retinal Worth It for Skin Over 50?
For me, yes.
What makes it worthwhile isn’t simply that I’ve reached Crystal Retinal 20. It’s that the range has allowed me to progress gradually and find a level that works for my skin.
I also like that it fits easily into my existing evening routine. I don’t need multiple additional products or a complicated regime around it.
As with any active skincare ingredient, I think patience and consistency matter far more than racing towards the highest strength.
Final Thoughts
Medik8 Crystal Retinal has become one of those products that has earned a permanent place in my evening skincare routine.
Working my way gradually from strength 3 to 20 has suited my skin, and alternating between 10 and 20 at the moment means I can continue using retinal comfortably without irritation.
I also think my weekly retinal-free evening is just as important. As I’ve got older, I’ve become much more conscious that good skincare isn’t only about active ingredients. Hydration, nourishment and protecting the skin barrier matter too.
For me, Crystal Retinal fits into that balance perfectly: an effective active when I want one, alongside plenty of evenings where looking after my skin is the priority.
