How to Get Glowing Skin Over 50: My Radiance-Boosting Skincare & Makeup

Radiance is one of those things we all seem to want from our skin. A healthy glow is incredibly flattering, but after 50 I hear so many women talk about their skin looking duller, pigmentation becoming more noticeable or simply feeling that the brightness they once had has disappeared.

I’m fortunate that my skin is naturally quite radiant, but I also put a lot of effort into looking after it. And I’ve learned that creating glow isn’t simply about applying a hydrating serum or a luminous makeup base and hoping for the best.

For me, radiance starts with the skin itself — gently removing the dull surface layer, keeping hydration levels up, supporting the skin barrier and using ingredients such as vitamin C. Makeup can then enhance what you’ve created rather than having to disguise dullness underneath.

That doesn’t mean chasing an unrealistic, glass-like shine or trying to make 50-year-old skin look 25. I want my skin to look healthy, fresh and luminous — and there are a few skincare and makeup steps that I find make a real difference.

Why Skin Can Look Duller After 50

There are good reasons why radiance can become harder to maintain as we get older. Skin renewal naturally slows with age, which can mean dead skin cells remain on the surface for longer. The result can be skin that looks a little rougher, flatter and less able to reflect light.

Hormonal changes around menopause can also affect the skin. Lower oestrogen levels are associated with changes in hydration, oil production and the skin’s structure, so dryness can become more noticeable — and dehydrated, dry skin rarely looks its most luminous.

Then there is everything our skin has accumulated over the years. Sun exposure can become more visible as uneven tone and pigmentation, which can also make the complexion appear less bright.

For me, the answer isn’t to attack all of this with stronger and stronger products. A combination of gentle exfoliation, hydration, antioxidants, barrier support and daily SPF makes much more sense — and gives us a good foundation for creating that healthy-looking glow.

My Radiance-Boosting Skincare Edit

I don’t think radiance comes from one miracle product. For me, it’s a combination of keeping the surface of my skin smooth, adding plenty of hydration and then using a few targeted products that help my skin look brighter and healthier.

Start With Gentle Exfoliation

When skin starts to look a little dull, gentle exfoliation can make an immediate difference to how smooth and fresh it appears. I use my Anua exfoliating pads around twice a week rather than exfoliating every day. I want to remove that dull surface build-up without leaving my skin feeling stripped or irritated.

Add Brightness and Hydration

After cleansing, I like to layer in something light and hydrating. This might be my Haruharu NAD mist, or I’ll use a brightening toner such as Naturium Multi-Bright milky Toner when uneven tone and brightness are my focus.

In the morning, Medik8 C-Tetra Advanced is one of my favourite steps. Vitamin C has become an important part of my routine for maintaining a brighter-looking complexion and providing antioxidant protection. I’ve learned that finding a vitamin C formula my skin is comfortable with is far more important than simply choosing the strongest one available.

Don’t Forget the Skin Barrier

Radiant skin also needs to be comfortable and well hydrated. In the evening, I like Naturium Barrier Bounce when my skin needs extra hydration and barrier support, particularly alongside the more active parts of my routine.

I then want a moisturiser that leaves my skin looking fresh rather than heavy or flat. S.NATURE Aqua Squalane Moisturizing Cream gives me that lovely hydrated finish without feeling overly rich.

Brighten the Eye Area

The eye area can make a surprising difference to how fresh the whole face looks. I like the Dr. Althea eye product with its cooling roller applicator — particularly when my eyes are looking tired or a little puffy.

None of these products has to create radiance on its own. It’s the combination — smoother skin, hydration, antioxidant protection and a healthy skin barrier — that gives me the base I want before makeup even enters the picture.

The Makeup That Makes the Biggest Difference

Once my skin is hydrated and prepped, makeup is where I can add that final bit of luminosity. I find that the finish and texture of the products I use make much more difference now than simply applying more makeup.

Start With a Luminous Base

I love a glow-enhancing base such as VIEVE Supernova Skin Nova. Used underneath makeup, it gives the skin that lovely illuminated finish without relying on lots of highlighter afterwards.

If I want my base to include sun protection too, Sculpted by Aimee Beauty Base Protect SPF50 is another useful option. I like products that can combine skin prep, glow and SPF, particularly in summer when I don’t want lots of heavy layers.

Brighten Rather Than Cover

Under the eyes, I prefer a brightening concealer rather than trying to cover everything with a thick layer of product. Rare Beauty is one I use for this.

I concentrate concealer mainly where I actually need it — particularly the inner corners and any darker areas underneath the eyes. Keeping the rest lighter helps the skin still look like skin rather than creating a perfectly covered but flat-looking base.

Add Light in the Right Places

A cream highlighter is one of the easiest ways to add a little extra radiance. I like formulas such as Westman Atelier or Morphe, applied sparingly to the high points of the face — particularly the cheekbones, with a tiny amount on the brow bone or Cupid’s bow if I want it.

For me, the aim isn’t sparkle. I want the light to catch the skin so it looks naturally fresh and luminous rather than obviously highlighted.

The biggest difference is often simply knowing when to stop. Hydrated skin, a luminous base, strategic concealer and a touch of cream highlighter can look far fresher than adding more and more layers.

My Five-Minute Glow Boost

Sometimes, even after my usual skincare routine, I want a quick five-minute glow boost to make my skin look that little bit fresher and more luminous.

I’ll add a layer of Naturium Barrier Bounce for extra hydration, followed by a generous mist of d’Alba White Truffle First Spray Serum for that instant dewy finish. I also love the d’Alba mist later in the day when my makeup is beginning to look a little flat.

Next, I’ll use a small amount of brightening concealer, concentrating on the areas that make the biggest difference — usually around the inner corners and underneath my eyes rather than covering the whole face.

Then I’ll add a little cream highlighter to the tops of my cheekbones. Just enough to catch the light rather than look glittery.

It’s a very simple combination — extra hydration, a little strategic brightening and some carefully placed glow — but it’s one of my quickest ways of making my complexion look fresher when I’m short of time.

What I Avoid When My Skin Looks Dull

When skin looks dull, it’s tempting to exfoliate more, add another active or pile on something very glowy to try to fix it immediately. For me, that’s usually the opposite of what my skin needs.

I avoid over-exfoliating or introducing lots of strong actives at once. If my skin is looking flat or dehydrated, I’ll concentrate more on hydration and supporting my skin barrier rather than trying to polish the dullness away.

The same applies to makeup. Very matte, heavy base products can take away the natural dimension of the skin, while too much highlighter can sit on top rather than creating a believable glow.

I find the most flattering radiance comes from skin that looks well hydrated and comfortable, with makeup used to enhance that rather than cover it up.

Final Thoughts

For me, radiance at 50 isn’t about trying to recreate the skin I had in my twenties. It’s about keeping the skin I have now looking healthy, comfortable and fresh.

There isn’t one serum, moisturiser or highlighter that creates that on its own. I think the best results come from looking after the skin consistently — gentle exfoliation when it needs it, plenty of hydration, antioxidant protection, a healthy skin barrier and SPF every day.

Then makeup becomes the finishing touch. A luminous base, a little brightening around the eyes and some carefully placed glow can enhance what’s already there without hiding the skin underneath.

And that’s really the kind of radiance I’m interested in: not perfect or overly shiny skin, just a complexion that looks healthy, rested and naturally luminous.
